  • 1.  BIRT Report Design/Development - in Maximo SaaS environment

    Posted 01-25-2022 11:28
    Hi all,

I am working in a SaaS environment for Maximo with my org.   I was wondering if any of you are and how you are approaching your BIRT report design and development in Maximo SaaS.   Since I am in SaaS, I can't connect BIRT Designer to our Maximo data source.   Is there a way to do a mockup of data in Excel or something like it so I can have something that resembles a data source.    I've been having to stick with using QBR which is ok for my needs but it is limiting.  I'd like use BIRT Designer a lot more than I am currently.

Just wanted to ask if there's anyone out there in a similar situation and what options there might be.

    Hi Ryan,

Do you have the option to use an OPEN VPN acccount to connect to the DB from the backend? With IBM Managed-Serivce Maximo SaaS Flex (DB2) this is how we handle creating BIRT Custom reports and then importing the .rpt file once we have the report set up the way we want it.

If you have SaaS, not SaaS flex, I'm not sure this will apply, but the IBM CDS Wiki has info on a number of self-service options if you have SaaS Flex: https://ibm-cds.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/ICDSW/pages/32959/Welcome+to+IBM+Cloud+Delivery+Services+CDS

I am not sure.  I will have to check into it.I was always told as blanket response that we weren't allowed any kind of backend access in our environment.  So I've had to rely almost solely on QBR reporting, which is frustrating because the options and the functionality just aren't there with QBR.  I get asked by more to do more than it will allow, and I always have come back to them and tell them that.

Good luck! I know sometimes COGNOS reporting is included with various Maximo products so that might be an option to explore as well.  They have a cloud version and individual user licenses that are fairly reasonable, especially on a cooperative agreement.  I would reach out to IBM – Account Manager, Support, etc. to ask about reporting options – I agree, the QBR is ok, but somewhat limiting without Custom Birt reports or another reporting solution.

    Hi Ryan,

Are you allowed access to Report Administration to export a .rptdesign?  If you can export your created QBR reports as a starting point for further enhancements.  Also, does the SaaS allow access to a Demo or Development database?  You would only need Read Only access to a development database to do 90% of report development or customization.  If you can export, the out of box reports are always a great starting point for the reports.  But remember the out of box .rptdesign files are the only copy.  Make a copy of the .rptdesign and rename it before you start digging in for changes.
Another tip; Work Order Details report, woprint.rptdesign, is the best report design for examples of cascading parameters, use of 'where' clause, and format/layout of Maximo/BIRT reports.

Yes I can export QBRs to BIRT Designer and that's how I've been working for now.  But I don't have live data source - so I can't preview them.  I have to re-import them back into Maximo and if they break or don't work, start the process all over again.   I've been trying to find out what my SaaS instance does and doesn't allow for data access.
