  • 1.  Help with Returning Rotating Assets in Maximo

    Hello,

We are new to working with rotating assets, and I have a question about how to return an asset after it has been issued. Issuing the asset works without any problems, but we are unsure how to properly return it once it has been used.

From my research, the process should be:

    Inventory → Return Rotating Asset

    1. Go to Inventory → Inventory.

    2. Locate the storeroom where the rotating asset belongs.

    3. From the Select Action menu, choose Return Rotating Asset.

    4. Enter details:

      • Rotating Item (item number)

      • Asset Number (specific tag/serial)

      • Storeroom/Location for the return

      • Quantity = 1 (since rotating items are tracked individually)

    5. Save → the asset should be moved back into the storeroom inventory.

The issue is that we do not see the Return Rotating Asset option in the menu. Some suggestions mention that the action RETURNROTASSET must be granted, but we have not been able to find this action.

Any guidance or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Mark

Returning the rotating item is going to be done utilizing the Inventory Usage application (using the Select Items for Return dialog) or the Move/Modify Asset functionality in the Assets application.

Using the Move/Modify Assets is the easiest but typically not the ideal choice in my opinion. When you issue a rotating item, the asset is moved out of the storeroom to the operating location. When you want to take it out of the operating location, you can move the asset back into the storeroom and bin. In that regard it's no different than moving an asset between two different operating locations.

I recommend using the Inventory Usage application on rotating items and selecting the exact issue transaction you are trying to return. If you perform a return without specifying the exact issue transaction using the Select Items for Return, your cost can be wrong. For example, an issue transaction to a WO might have a cost of $100. If by the time you perform the return the average cost changes to $90, and you do a return without selecting the transaction, the return value will be $90. This means there is a cost of $10 on the WO that likely shouldn't be there. If you select the issue transaction it will use the price from the original transaction so it completely offsets.
