Classifications in Maximo can be used to categorize many types of records. For this discussion, I am going to focus on Assets and Items. Classifications can help users quickly find the type of asset or item they're looking for and can also be used to define specific attributes, actions, or procedures associated with different classes of assets/items. It can also be a key component of providing asset and item naming standards.

For example, you can classify assets as "Pumps," "HVAC Systems," "Vehicles," etc. Under "Pumps," you could have sub-classifications like "Centrifugal Pumps" or "Diaphragm Pumps."

    Attributes:

Once you have a classification, you can define attributes for that classification. Attributes are specific pieces of data you want to collect or display for a given classification. For the "Pumps" classification, for instance, you might have attributes like "Capacity," "Pump Speed," "Manufacturer," and "Serial #."

When an asset or item is assigned a classification, it inherits the attributes of that classification, allowing users to fill in the data for those specific attributes. You can also associate images.

    Benefits of Classifications and Attributes:

    • Consistency: Having a defined set of classifications and attributes ensures that data is entered consistently across the organization.
    • Efficiency: Users can quickly identify and locate assets based on their classifications.
    • Enhanced Reporting: It becomes easier to generate reports or analyses when assets are classified and their data is structured.
    • Improved Maintenance Scheduling: Based on classifications, specific preventive maintenance processes can be applied to groups of assets, ensuring they are maintained appropriately.

Classifications are hierarchical meaning they may have several layers (sub classifications) and assoiciated Attributes. It's best practice; however, not to make them too complex as it can defeat the original purpose.

As opposed to manually entering Classifications and associated Attributes, there are several ways to import Maximo classification structures. I will leave that as a subject for another day.

Does your organization use Maximo Classifications? What benefits do you see? What challenges do you have?
