I don't work for them but there are companies like Maxis (Archiving made easy… Just let Alchemize do it!) that specialize in archiving Maximo data. Most customers want to still be able to access & report on the historical data and their solution helps provide that capability while removing it from the main transactional database to improve performance. Even if you intend to delete without archiving, this could still be helpful because they have built processes to help ensure dependent tables are removed as well. And can help if you need different rules around the deletes such as keeping certain work orders longer depending on criticality.

As Steven mentioned there are add-ons available for various business partners that allow to archive or purge data. I've used Omninecs easy data archiving  software that runs directly in Maximo https://www.omninecs.com/en/eda/

Deleting old records can certainly improve performance - it is well worth reviewing any BMXAA6720W slow SQL warnings (http://www.linkedin.com/pulse/individual-bmxaa6720w-slow-sql-entries-maximo-logs-need-mark-robbins)

I have investigated lots of performance problems and the slow SQL is important.

    Archiving/deleting data can help.

This blog article discusses things to consider when archiving/deleting data:

If you are writing your own queries to delete records then it is critical to ensure that the related records are deleted e.g. when deleting workorder records then it is important to delete the associated wostatus records..

Cohesive have implemented archiving for customers.

Cohesive offer consultancy to investigate performance problems.
