Maximo in multi-window mode

  • 1.  Maximo in multi-window mode

    Posted 3 days ago

    Hello, experts!
I'm asking for advice on how to make Maximo work in multi-window mode.
For example, to have SR open in one tab in the current Sense, PR in another, and the start center with portlets in the first tab?
    Best regards!

    Hi Sergey,

I would be curious to know what version of Maximo you are using and understand further what you are referring to as 'Multi-Window Mode'. For me, I login to Maximo on 3 different tabs of my browser. I can then use those tabs as needed, breaking them into different windows - or keeping them all in one window as 3 tabs.

    Thank you,

    Alan, good afternoon!
    Thanks for your reply!
    I'm using versions 7.6.0.6 and 7.6.1.3.
By multi-window mode, I mean I could go to Maximo, go to the Start Center, right-click the SR app, and open it in a new tab. Then, I'd go back to the main tab and open, for example, the Locations app in another tab within the same user session.

    Sergey,

I am able to have multiple sessions open at the same time within my environments. I do this by first logging into one, then open a new browser tab(not by the right click - open in new tab), then in the browser tab type the URL in again. This allows me to have multiple sessions open and move them around as needed.

    Thank you,

Sergey, The best way to have multiple windows is to login multiple times as described by @Allan Henle.
The application design means that sessions created as you describe risk overloading the system.

I have investigated problems where users have created multiple sessions and then seen performance problems that led to parts of the system failing.

This highly technical article discusses how sessions are managed - http://www.linkedin.com/pulse/maximo-users-login-counts-accidentally-overloading-jvm-mark-robbins

That article is from 10 years in 2016 and references Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer is no longer supported unless you're still using Windows 7 or XP. I suppose it is something to be aware of if you're still using Maximo 7.1 or 7.6 still. Even with Maximo 7.6, I don't know if there are any workstations that would run Internet Explorer. We all moved to Chrome & Edge after going to Windows 10 or Windows 11.

Yes the article is old but the core user / web client session functionality is still there.

If you go into the logs then you can see the references to Web Client Sessions... if you create enough sessions incorrectly then it is still possible to overload a MAS POD...

Yes IE is now out of date... but Edge includes some of the IE code. Microsoft said that it was a new piece of code but at the time IE specific fixes were also being used and applied to Edge. I know... because I was supporting the systems.

On Maximo 7.6, the system property to check is
    mxe.webclient.maxuisessions

Defines the maximum number of sessions allowed by the server.

    0 means unlimited.

For multi-session tabs, I've always used https://maximo.yoursite/maximo/ui/ (with the trailing slash). And that's always let me open multiple tabs in a single window in Chrome/Edge. If you save it as a bookmark in your browser, you can just click it and a new Maximo window appears. The login that Maximo gives you when you log in usually breaks the ability to open multiple tabs (the long login.jsp URL).

When I tried as you suggested, it changed the URL to .../maximo/webclient/login/login.jsp

That's ok, go ahead and save that bookmark in your web browser. Edit the bookmark and just make it your website/maximo/ui/ . Log into maximo, open another tab, then click on the bookmark. As long as your starting web address is /maximo/ui/ then it shouldn't matter what you see afterwards. Hopefully, you'll have two sessions on two different tabs. I use this all the time, when I need to look at assets, locations, work orders, PMs, and inventory in various combinations.

Maybe I am overlooking something, but I don't see how the changed URL helps. If I log out of one tab and return to the other, it logs me out. I open multiple tabs in the same browser all the time. Typically, I'll open another session in a different browser, and one doesn't log out the other. Please advise if I have missed something.

    Stevie,

If you are logging out of Maximo it will close your sessions for your user and kick you out. If you are working in multiple windows you shouldn't need to log out. I recommend not logging out of your environment until you are done working in Maximo.

    Thank you,

I see what you mean. I think /maximo/ui/ and /maximo/webclient/login/login.jsp will let you open up multiple labs. I guess I just got used to making a minimal URL because I'd often create shortcuts on desktops manually. But yeah, either, url works for multi tabs.
