  • 1.  Multiple session windows or tabs for daily workflow

I was told a decade ago that running multiple windows (sessions) was not advised and could lead to issues.  I've seen it cause conflicts during a save and also seen users operate this way and 90% of the time have no problems.   I have not had anyone make a solid use case for this style of behavior.   I've heard explanations about searching for duplicates when creating follow ups, searching for parts while writing a work order, etc. but never something that I couldn't do as fast in the same session.

We've noticed since upgrading to MAS 9.0 that the software seems a less negotiable on the single session stance.  There are still ways around it with in-private windows but otherwise it will deliver a message and block the action.

I'm curious if others have seen worthwhile use cases for the multiple sessions?

Also does anyone know if multiple sessions will have any effect on app point consumption?

As for why, we often need to have asset information up while reviewing work order/SR information. It's easiest for us to have two tabs as we switch back and forth constantly.

Regarding app point consumption, MAS will not double charge the same user even if they login on completely different devices. For example, you can login to Maximo Mobile & desktop, multiple browsers (Chrome & Firefox), etc. and will still only consume the 1 set of app points.

If you're having issues in MAS, make sure users copy the URL up to the /maximo but nothing after when they open the second tab. IE:

    https://mas.manage.YOURDOMAIN.com/maximo

I recommend creating this as a bookmark to keep it easy. That should avoid issues with more than 1 tab.

    Hi Scott,

Our Planners use multiple sessions regularly.  Especially when working between WOs, PMs and Job Plans.

I would say the only useful use case is if a user does want to view and interact with different applications at the same time. Most of us have two screens so two separate browser windows can help in viewing and switching between the Maximo applications.

For me it is really down to personal preference, my confidence with using multiple browser tabs and windows rather than Maximo itself and the amount of interaction I have with Maximo at any given time given my requirement for convenience and saving a few clicks moving between different applications.

The most likely cause of conflicts is opening two views of the same or similar applications and entering data on the same record.

From my experience both as a client and an implementer, these conflicts rarely occur and are easily addressed if they do occur - maybe not so for people less familiar with the software.

My decades of experience are similar to yours: usually it works, sometimes it doesn't. As Steven said, it helps a lot if you don't include anything after the context (/maximo) in the original URL. But the only thing I've found to be really reliable is Private Mode. Have one browser window in Public and one in Private. If you really need more than 2, use Public and Private windows of a second browser brand. This is because the real problem is the need to keep cookies from the multiple sessions separate. So, another reliable means is to use different FQDNs / host names in URLs.

Sometimes during development, but not often, I find it helpful to have 2 browser windows (a public and a private) open: one to the development app (like App Designer or Automation Scripting) and another to the app I'm working on / running my tests in. But the pain of using 1 window and switching back and forth can be dramatically reduced by using Default Saved Queries and Bookmarks. Using those techniques, the juice might not be worth the squeeze of using a second browser window.

When operating in 9.1.2, I've observed that in the Assets > Reliability Strategies application the pop-up that offers the link to "Open Job Plans" when you select the Copy icon for "Job plan details" in the "Mitigation activities" results in the application opening the Job Plans application in a separate Tab in the existing browser session (Currently MS Edge for me).  I've continued to fully navigate within MAS in both open browser Tabs and have not experienced any negative results thus far.

While working in 9.1.2, I've observed that in the Assets > Reliability Strategies application, the pop-out that offers the link for "Open Job Plans" will open the Job Plans application in a second browser Tab.  The pop-out is produced when you select the "Copy" icon next to "Job plan details" in the "Mitigation activities" view of the primary application.  I've continued to navigate within MAS for my session across multiple applications within both Tabs and have not experienced any negative results.
