Specifically, I am trying to understand how to implement auto-approval for contracts with a WSTART status when the current date falls within their active date range. Best way to handle this scenario would be to create an Escalation to monitor for this condition, which would then trigger an Action to change the status to approved.

You can create Actions with Value = APPROVE and use it to Escalation where condition is STATUS = 'WSTART'
