Maximo allows entering and tracking downtime against Assets (in Asset and Work Order related applications). The information that can be provided with downtime are downtime code and radio button around "Operational" and "Non-Operational" type downtime. 

Is there a way to identify Unplanned downtime using this information? Any best practices or recommendations around how to track unplanned downtime in Maximo?

Are you using the downtime code for "breakdown" as one of your options? Using that in combination with the work type (CM or EM) and the failure code should give you all that you need.
