MXLoader as Chris Winston mentions is popular for customers because it allows them to work in Excel.
If you're willing to learn how to do the bulk import via External System & Enterprise Service, this is better for large volumes of records because you can utilize a continuous queue that will process messages concurrently. You likely still want to use a CSV format rather than XML for simplicity which requires you to configure the object structure to support flat structure and then alias any conflicts that exist. Some high level information on the data import via external system is here: Importing file-based data - IBM Documentation

Subject: Bulk update on existing assets
We have a transferred database that does not have asset purchase information and asset detail filled in. We have a large number of similar items (fire extinguishers, smoke detectors) that I would like to update. Is there a way to bulk update these fields?
